About the Award
The Leopoldo Bancain Uichanco Memorial Award is conferred by the Philippine Association of Entomologists, Inc. upon Filipino entomologists, primarily for outstanding contributions to Philippine entomology. It traces its roots to the PAE Meritorious Award for Distinguished Entomologist conferred to Dr. Silverio M. Cendaña in 1974. In 1975, the PAE instituted the Outstanding Entomologist Award, the first awardee being the Father of Philippine Entomology himself, Dr. Leopoldo B. Uichanco. Later in 1980, this award was renamed after him, with a plaque given to winners that carried a cash award. The first to receive this prestigious award bearing the venerable name of Dean Uichanco was the first Filipina Entomologist, now National Scientist, Dr. Clare R. Baltazar.
