Who is Dr. Stephen G. Reyes?

Dr. Stephen G. Reyes has made significant contributions to insect systematics through his extensive taxonomic work, particularly in identifying and classifying new insect species, thereby enhancing our understanding of biodiversity. His research has helped refine phylogenetic relationships within various insect groups using both morphological and molecular data. Additionally, he has contributed to the development of identification keys and databases, supporting conservation efforts and further studies in Entomology.

About the Award


The Stephen G. Reyes Memorial Award in Insect Systematics was created to commemorate and honor the dedication of Dr. Reyes in the field of Insect Taxonomy and Systematics. His passion for Apoidea taxonomy is immeasurable. This award encourages students working in Insect Taxonomy and Systematics to strive for excellence. Hence, this reward is given to the student for Best Publication in Insect Taxonomy and Systematics.

Criteria

  • All students (B.S., M.Sc. & Ph. D.) who have published their thesis or dissertation from 2022-2024 in Insect Taxonomy and Systematics
  • Publications should be a product of the thesis or dissertation from 2022 to 2024
  • Student graduated from 2022-2024
  • Article must be in the field of Insect Taxonomy or Insect Systematics
  • Article must be written in English and published in a peer-reviewed journal
  • Student must be the corresponding or senior author of the publication

Who can nominate

Nominators must certify in the nomination that all the nominees have been informed and agree with the nomination.

Nominations should be submitted in PDF format via email to SGRMA Chair, Cristian C. Lucañas (cclucanas@up.edu.ph). SGRMA members are responsible in checking the eligibility of the nominations and inform the nominees for their eligibility.

The nomination should include the following materials:

  • Nomination Form
  • A consent that the nominated authors stating that they have been informed and that they agree with the nomination
  • Digital copy of the peer-reviewed publication in pdf format

Award Scientific Committee

The Evaluation Committee is comprised of 5 independent voting members. They are responsible to rate the quality of all nominated articles according to the criteria and review procedure.

Award Criteria

The Committee will rate the quality of the nominated articles based on the following:

  1. Clarity of the taxonomic treatment
  2. Problem should be clearly stated
  3. Quality of presentation
  4. Correctness of methodology based on insect group
  5. Research design and analysis
  6. Appropriateness and interpretation of results
  7. Discussion and critical view of the author
  8. Overall quality

Review Process

Screening will be done in two phases:

  • 1st phase: mean ratings will be calculated by the evaluators. Three articles with
    the highest ratings or scores will be nominated for the second phase process.
  • 2nd phase: these papers will be re-evaluated to choose the best publication
    and declared as the recipient of the SGRM Awardee.

Note: Officers and members with conflict of interest will inhibit themselves from screening the publications

Winner of SGRMA

The winner of the SGRM Awards is the publication that will receive the highest mean evaluation from the five independent members of the committee. Awardee receives Php 12,000.00 (cash) sponsored by Dr. Cecilia P. Reyes and a plaque from the Philippine Association of Entomologists, Inc.
