Banyuhay: The Transformative Journey of Philippine Entomology

The Philippine Entomology Congress (PEC) is a historic event that marks the first national gathering of entomologists, experts, researchers, professionals, students, and enthusiasts with a shared passion and interest in insects.
Insects are vital to ecosystems and human society, serving as beneficial organisms and pests. In the Philippines, insects are deeply intertwined with daily life, from their crucial role in agriculture and food security to their impact on public health. Despite their importance, entomology is a field with much untapped potential, awaiting further exploration and recognition in the country.
With the theme “Banyuhay: The Transformative Journey of Philippine Entomology,” the Congress celebrates the concept of “banyuhay”—the Filipino word for “metamorphosis”. As a journey and a transformative process, it aspires to rekindle the nation’s focus on the science and art of entomology, reflecting on its history, milestones, and the profound impact it has had—and can continue to have—in addressing the challenges of the 21st century.
In its inaugural year, the Congress highlights three domains where entomology plays a transformative role:
- Insect Ecology, Biodiversity, and Conservation – Exploring the diversity of insect life in the Philippines, their ecological roles, and the need for sustainable conservation efforts amid climate change and habitat loss.
- Medical Entomology and One Health – Examining the role of insects and related arthropods in the interconnected health of humans and the environment within the One Health framework.
- Intelligent Systems and Engineering – Showcasing how artificial intelligence, robotics, and other technological advancements can revolutionize entomological research and draw inspiration from insects to enhance innovation and efficiency in various industries.
Significance
The first Congress will revisit the rich history of Philippine entomology, recognizing the invaluable contributions of its pioneers. It will provide an opportunity to celebrate the breakthroughs and achievements in research, conservation efforts, public health, and technological applications that have advanced the field. Beyond science, the Congress will also showcase the intersection of entomology and art, promoting creative expressions inspired by insects. Furthermore, the Congress looks forward to future innovations and collaborations aiming to harness the potential of insects in addressing pressing environmental, health, and technological challenges.
